About Iceland
Iceland is a refreshingly unconventional travel destination. The Icelandic nature is unspoilt, exotic and mystical with its spouting geysers, active volcanoes, tumbling waterfalls, towering mountains, vast lava plains and magical lakes. Iceland’s fjords, glaciers and highland plains present visitors with some of the most beautiful and enchanting places they will ever see, as well as a rare feeling of utter tranquillity.
For travelers on a quest for action, Iceland’s pristine nature offers great potential for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, horse riding, cave exploring, hiking, swimming, skiing, river rafting, kayaking and mountain safaris on modified four-wheel drives, to name but a few. Iceland supports a surprisingly diverse Nordic flora and fauna and is an ideal place for ornithology enthusiasts, while also offering some of the world’s best whale watching destinations.
About Reykjavik
Reykjavík sometimes feels like a cosmopolitan capital and a tiny seaside village - all wrapped up in one. But Reykjavík has the best of both worlds; the qualities of a modern, forward-looking society complemented by a close connection to Iceland‚s beautiful and unspoilt nature.
Reykjavík’s legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavík has been described as a young and daring city that is characterized by strong contrasts. Conveniently small, clean and safe, it is more or less free from the major problems that haunt many other capitals. Big city events are frequent, the winter lights festival finished recently with thousands of participants and more tourist at this time of the year than we are used to.
This guided tour is ideal for visitors looking for a comfortable yet active in-depth winter trip to Iceland. The tour is guided by a professional local guide, who takes you to many of the biggest attractions in Iceland including Þingvellir National Park, the Great Geysir, Gullfoss Waterfall, Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss waterfall and more. In the darker winter months (Oct – March), the Northern Lights are not an uncommon sight outside of Reykjavik in favorable weather conditions. The tour includes accommodation in Reykjavík and by Lake Mývatn.
Day 1: Arrival/Reykjavík
Arrival in Keflavik, meet and greet followed by transfer to Reykjavík. The rest of the day is open to explore Reykjavik, visit museums, landmarks and such. Downtown Reykjavík offers a plethora of excellent restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, for those who want to experience the renowned Reykjavík nightlife. Overnight at the Reykjavik Centrum Hotel or a similar high-end hotel in central Reykjavík.
Day 2: The Golden Circle
Pick up from your hotel in the morning for a guided tour of the “Golden Circle”. Visit the beautiful Þingvellir National Park, where the North-American and European continents meet, before heading to the great Geysir area, home of the original “Geyser”. Close to Geysir we find the two-tiered, icebound Gullfoss waterfall, often called Icelandic tourism’s star attraction, which is especially majestic in the wintertime. End the tour by visiting Langjökull glacier, Europe’s second largest, before heading back to Reykjavik, where you will overnight.
Day 3: North Iceland
Take a morning flight to Akureyri, the capital of north Iceland. From Akureyri you will head to Lake Mývatn where you will spend the rest of the day exploring the stunning scenery. If the season and weather conditions allow, you will be taken on a tour to search for the Northern Lights after taking a dip in the Lake Mývatn Nature Baths and having a nice dinner at your hotel on the lake.
Day 4: Lake Mývatn and Dettifoss
Pick up at your hotel for a full-day guided tour of the surroundings of Lake Mývatn and the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. Among the sites visites are the waterfalls Hafragilsfoss and Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and the active volcano Mt. Krafla; the tour ends with a thrilling snowmobile ride. Dinner at your hotel can be followed by a Northern Lights tour*.
Day 5: Wintertime Activities
Today you will have an open schedule and have the option of going skiing, horse-riding or ice fishing around Lake Mývatn (note:not included in price). The skiing areas in the northern part are the very best in Iceland; you don’t need any previous riding experience at all to enjoy riding the docile but independent Icelandic horse, and fishing through the ice sheet on Lake Mývatn, rich in trout and arctic char, is a stoic, Zen-like experience on a still winter day. Dinner at the hotel can be followed by a Northern Lights tour*.
Day 6: Back to Reykjavik
Start the day by Lake Mývatn before being transported to Akureyri airport in time for an early afternoon flight to Reykjavik, where you will overnight. Downtown Reykjavík offers a plethora of excellent restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, for those who want to experience the renowned Reykjavík nightlife.
Day 7: Departure
We leave Reykjavik in the morning for a trip to the geologically active Lake Kleifarvatn and the moon-like Krýsuvík cove, where you can see hot springs and bubbling mud pots. From there, we go to the last stop before departure, the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater spa, set in a magical black lava field. It is rich in silica and blue-green algae, which give the lagoon its reputed healing powers. The lagoon provides a wonderful last memorable taste of Iceland, and ensures that you are fully unwound and relaxed when taken to Keflavik international airport in time for your check-in.
* If weather conditions do not allow for a Northern Lights tour on day 3, we will try again when the conditions are better on day 4 or 5.
