About Iceland
Iceland is a refreshingly unconventional travel destination. The Icelandic nature is unspoilt, exotic and mystical with its spouting geysers, active volcanoes, tumbling waterfalls, towering mountains, vast lava plains and magical lakes. Iceland’s fjords, glaciers and highland plains present visitors with some of the most beautiful and enchanting places they will ever see, as well as a rare feeling of utter tranquillity.
For travelers on a quest for action, Iceland’s pristine nature offers great potential for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, horse riding, cave exploring, hiking, swimming, skiing, river rafting, kayaking and mountain safaris on modified four-wheel drives, to name but a few. Iceland supports a surprisingly diverse Nordic flora and fauna and is an ideal place for ornithology enthusiasts, while also offering some of the world’s best whale watching destinations.
About Reykjavik
Reykjavík sometimes feels like a cosmopolitan capital and a tiny seaside village - all wrapped up in one. But Reykjavík has the best of both worlds; the qualities of a modern, forward-looking society complemented by a close connection to Iceland‚s beautiful and unspoilt nature.
Reykjavík’s legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavík has been described as a young and daring city that is characterized by strong contrasts. Conveniently small, clean and safe, it is more or less free from the major problems that haunt many other capitals. Big city events are frequent, the winter lights festival finished recently with thousands of participants and more tourist at this time of the year than we are used to.
Enjoy an extensive 5-day city break, including guided daytours to many of Iceland’s biggest natural attractions, such as the stunning Gullfoss waterfall, the great Geysir area and the scenic south coast of Iceland. Experience the mystical northern lights and enjoy the surprising amount of cultural activities, museums, high-class restaurants and bars that Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital, has to offer.
Day 1: A Warm Welcome to Iceland
Arrival in Keflavik, meet and greet followed by transfer to Reykjavík. You will be free for the rest of the day to explore Reykjavik, visit museums, landmarks and such. Downtown Reykjavík offers a plethora of excellent restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, for those who want to experience the renowned Reykjavík nightlife. Stay overnight at a hotel or guesthouse in central Reykjavík.
Day 2: Reykjavik City Sightseeing and the Northern Lights
Start the day at 11:00, when you are picked up for a 3-hour guided tour of Reykjavík. The tour provides a detailed and comprehensive introduction to Reykjavík’s past and present, visiting many of the cities main landmarks, museums and the Hallgrímskirkja church. You will be picked up again between 19:30 and 20:00 for a guided Northern Lights tour. The Northern Lights—the Aurora Borealis—are a spectacular natural phenomena, usually only visible over the polar regions of the Earth. The lights were often feared in the past and thought to be the realm of the dead; Vikings believed they were reflections of unmarried women who had passed away. There are still some mysteries surrounding the Northern Lights, but today they are considered somewhat less fearful. The swirling, colourful displays, ranging from white to green, pink, blue or even in rare cases red, are truly an unforgettable sight to behold; neither words nor pictures nor films could do them any justice.
Day 3: The Golden Circle
Visit many of Iceland’s biggest attractions on the classic “Golden Circle” route on this fantastic guided bus tours. You will be picked and taken to Þingvellir national park, where the Icelandic parliament, the Alþingi, was established in 930, making it the world’s oldest functioning legislative body. Þingvellir is also where the North Atlantic Rift, which separates the North American and European continents, is very prominent. The rift offers a bridge between the two and a veritable no-man’s-land inside the Almannagjá ravine, with the North American continent on one side and the European continent on the other. From Þingvellir you will be taken to the geothermal area of Haukadalur to witness the Great Geysir—the original “Geyser” hot spring—or its ever-reliable counterpart, Strokkur, erupt; Strokkur erupts roughly every 8 minutes, so an eruption is guaranteed. There will be time to explore the bubbling mud pots, geysers and other geological phenomena around the Great Geysir and after lunch at the Geysir Centre (optional), you will be taken to the stunning two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. The great white glacial cascade drops 32 meters into a 70-metre deep canyon; Gullfoss is generally considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island and has been called “Iceland’s star attraction” by many. From Gullfoss, the tour goes to the ancient implosion crater Kerið, which has accumulated water over the years, forming a lake at the bottom. The crater offers very interesting acoustics, which have spurred a couple of concerts held on a raft on the lake. Heading back to Reykjavik, we will stop at the Hveragerði “greenhouse community”; the town has a number of geothermally heated greenhouses, and you can see how Icelanders grow their fruit and vegetables, making them self-sufficient in the growth of bananas, among other things.
Day 4: South Shore Adventure
You will be picked up at 8:30 for a guided bus tour of the scenic south coast of Iceland, wealthy in history as well as natural attractions. We start with the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Seljalandsfoss is 40 meters high and its main attraction, besides the scenery, is the fact that there is a pathway leading behind the waterfall and out the other side, giving visitors a chance to view the falls from within. The tour will also take you to the black volcanic sand beach south of Vík, Iceland’s southernmost village, to view the spectacular rock formations Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar. The last stop before heading back to Reykjavik is the picture-perfect Skógafoss waterfall. The falls are 60 meters high and reportedly hide a treasure belonging to a settler in the area, Þrasi. According to legend, the last attempt to find and fetch the treasure chest resulted in one of its rings coming off, and it is now used as a door-ring on Skógar church.
Day 5: Reykjavík
A free day to explore the city of Reykjavík, visit attractions, landmarks and museums—downtown Reykjavík offers a plethora of excellent restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, for those who want to experience the renowned Reykjavík nightlife.
Day 6: Departure with a Twist
You have a choice of being picked up at 8:30 or 10:30 for a trip to the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater spa. It is rich in silica and blue-green algae, which gives the lagoon its reputed healing powers that have produced a wide range of Blue Lagoon skincare products. Relaxing in-water massages are available, but guests can also unwind in the saunas and steam baths or get a natural massage under the Blue Lagoon waterfall. The spa provides a wonderful last memorable taste of Iceland, and ensures that you are fully unwound and relaxed when taken to Keflavik International airport in time for an afternoon check-in.
