This self-guided bus tour takes you around Iceland’s famous Ring Road, bringing you to many of the country’s top attractions. You’ll also see a different side of Iceland with a detour over the Kjölur mountain road through the interior highlands. This tour is ideal for independent travelers who want a flexible itinerary along with the security of confirmed accommodations, which are included in Reykjavik, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and in areas of the South Coast near the glaciers.

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
Arrive to Keflavík Airport in Iceland and transfer to Reykjavík via the Flybus. After storing your luggage at your accommodation, take a stroll around the colorful historic center of the city, with visits to some of the many museums, shops and cafes. You’ll also find a wide array of restaurants to tempt your taste buds. |

Day 2: Reykjavík to Akureyri
Board the bus at Reykjavik’s BSÍ bus terminal for the journey to Akureyri. Along the way, the bus will stop at the following attractions: Þingvellir National park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (30 min); the Haukadaulr geothermal area, home of the great Geysir (1 hour 15 min); the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, which plunges into the deep Hvítá river canyon (35 min); and the snowcapped Kerlingarfjöll Mountains (2 hours 20 min). The bus arrives to Akureyri in the evening. |

Day 3: Free Time in Akureyri
Use this open day for enjoying the many sights and activities in Akureyri and its surrounding areas. This small and charming city, overlooking the Eyjafjörður fjord, is often called the “Capital of the North”. With its northerly latitude of 66°, the midnight sun keeps the summer nights bright here—giving you plenty of extra daylight for exploring. In the city center you’ll find a number of well-preserved old houses, interesting museums, a botanical garden and great restaurants.

Day 4: Explore North Iceland
Today you have another whole day at your leisure. The city of Akureyri is well situated as a base for exploring the beautiful countryside of North Iceland. We recommend joining one of the guided bus tours to Lake Mývatn, an area well known for its surreal volcanic landscapes. Other options in the vicinity include whale watching tours, sea angling, ATV excursions or horse riding tours. You’ll also find a number of interesting hiking trails near the city.

Day 5: Akureyri to Egilsstaðir
Take the bus from the central bus station in Akureyri to Egilsstaðir. Along the way, you’ll have some brief stops to enjoy the magnificent Goðafoss waterfall (10 min) and Reykjahlíð by Lake Mývatn (10 min). Enjoy the afternoon in the town of Egilsstaðir, perhaps with a short hike around town, a dip in the local thermal pool or just relaxing at a café.

Day 6: Day Tour to Seyðisfjörður
From Egilsstaðir, catch the bus for a 20 minute ride to nearby Seyðisfjörður. This village nestled in the eastern fjords is one of Iceland’s most picturesque spots with its beautifully preserved wooden buildings and steep mountains on all sides. This is also a great area for a scenic hike in one of the many paths or for taking part in other optional activities, such as kayaking, golfing, diving or sea angling. Take the bus back to Egilsstaðir in the afternoon.

Day 7: Egilsstaðir to Höfn
Enjoy the morning in Egilsstaðir before boarding the bus at Egilsstaðir’s bus station. Today’s destination is Höfn in Hornafjörður, a beautiful town with volcanic black sands leading to the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the snow-capped highlands to the north. Once in Höfn, you can feast on the town’s renowned lobster and get a good night’s rest in the soothing environment between the glacier and the ocean.

Day 8: Höfn at Your Leisure
This day is free for you to enjoy the many sights and activities in and around Höfn. We recommend joining a snowmobile tour on Vatnajökull glacier or an ATV tour in the surrounding highlands. The town’s coastal location also makes it a perfect place for a pedal boat excursion or for bird watching or hiking along the black sandy beaches.

Day 9: Höfn to Hvolsvöllur
Take the bus from the station at Höfn to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier area. The first leg of today’s journey takes you alongside Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where you have time for an optional boat tour during the stop. Continuing westward, the bus stops at scenic Skaftafell, the towns of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Vík and the waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Day 10 & 11: Open Day to Explore South Iceland
Enjoy the many sights and activities in beautiful South Iceland today! Some of your options in this area include a guided bus or super jeep tour into the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve, a day trip to the volcanic Westman Islands, hiking on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, riding a sure-footed Icelandic horse or snorkeling at the Silfra fissure ravine in Þingvellir National Park.

Day 12: Hvolsvöllur to Reykjavík
Closing the circle today, the bus brings you back to Reykjavik, arriving to the BSÍ bus terminal around noon. Enjoy the rest of the day in Reykjavik’s city centre with its many museums, art galleries, shops and fine restaurants. Since tomorrow is an open day in the city, this is also an ideal evening to sample the downtown’s vibrant nightlife or live music scene. |

Day 13: Reykjavík at Your Leisure
Use your last full day in Iceland to enjoy the many sights and activities in the greater Reykjavik area. Suggested activities include: a visit to the Blue Lagoon, whale watching tour from Reykjavik’s old harbor, renting a bike for a ride around the city, relaxing with the locals at a thermal pool, a tour of the new Harpa concert hall, shopping for Icelandic designs at Laugavegur, snorkeling or diving at Silfra in Þingvellir, horseback riding or an ATV tour. The possibilities for this day are endless!

Day 14: Departure
Today, it’s time to head home after your amazing journey around Iceland. Transfer to Keflavík Airport via the Flybus in time for your check-in. If your flight is in the afternoon, we highly recommend a stop at the Blue Lagoon for a therapeutic soak in the warm mineral waters. |

How it works:
On Day 2 of your holiday in Iceland, pick up your bus passport at the BSÍ bus terminal in central Reykjavik at least 30 minutes prior to the first scheduled departure of your journey (as listed in your full itinerary from Icelandguest.com). From then on, you are responsible for showing up in time for each scheduled bus departure according to the timetables provided in your itinerary.
