About Iceland
Iceland is a refreshingly unconventional travel destination. The Icelandic nature is unspoilt, exotic and mystical with its spouting geysers, active volcanoes, tumbling waterfalls, towering mountains, vast lava plains and magical lakes. Iceland’s fjords, glaciers and highland plains present visitors with some of the most beautiful and enchanting places they will ever see, as well as a rare feeling of utter tranquillity.
For travelers on a quest for action, Iceland’s pristine nature offers great potential for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, horse riding, cave exploring, hiking, swimming, skiing, river rafting, kayaking and mountain safaris on modified four-wheel drives, to name but a few. Iceland supports a surprisingly diverse Nordic flora and fauna and is an ideal place for ornithology enthusiasts, while also offering some of the world’s best whale watching destinations.
About Reykjavik
Reykjavík sometimes feels like a cosmopolitan capital and a tiny seaside village - all wrapped up in one. But Reykjavík has the best of both worlds; the qualities of a modern, forward-looking society complemented by a close connection to Iceland‚s beautiful and unspoilt nature.
Reykjavík’s legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavík has been described as a young and daring city that is characterized by strong contrasts. Conveniently small, clean and safe, it is more or less free from the major problems that haunt many other capitals. Big city events are frequent, the winter lights festival finished recently with thousands of participants and more tourist at this time of the year than we are used to.
This 4X4 tour includes the most beautiful sights of south Iceland, taking you off the beaten track to the exotic highland interior. Experience the vast wilderness, glaciers, waterfalls, colourful mountains, volcanoes and other stunning phenomena that south Iceland has to offer. The sights include Þingvellir National Park, Landmannalaugar, Skaftafell National Park, Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and more. This package includes accommodation in Reykjavík, Hrauneyjar, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell National Park and Vík.
Day 1: Arrival/Reykjavík
Arrival in Keflavik, meet and greet followed by transport to Reykjavík.
If you arrive early, we recommend stopping at the Blue Lagoon on your way to Reykjavík (not included) and/or getting the Reykjavík Tourist Card, which grants you access to all the museums owned by the city of Reykjavík, all the swimming pools in Reykjavík and all buses that run within the greater Reykjavík area. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.
Day 2: Þingvellir – Þjórsárdalur Valley
Head east to Þingvellir National Park. From Þingvellir, there is a short drive to the great Geysir area and Gullfoss waterfall. The reconstructed Viking farm at Stöng and the waterfall Hjálparfoss in Þjórsárdalur valley make for interesting stops on the way to Hrauneyjar in the impressive highland interior, where you will spend the night.
Day 3: Landmannalaugar
Drive to the other-worldly Landmannalaugar. Enjoy the surreal colours and surroundings, and take a bath in the natural hot pools there. After Landmannalaugar, stop at the Eldgjá fissure system and hike to the waterfall Ófærufoss, one of Iceland’s most spectacular waterfalls. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Day 4: Skaftafell National Park
Drive east to Skaftafell National Park, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Iceland. Hike to the waterfall Svartifoss, dropping from the edge of a wide cliff of basalt columns before enjoying a boat trip on the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in the Skaftafell National Park area.
Day 5: The Beautiful South
Experience the black sand beach south of Vík and the rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar before heading to Skógar. At Skógar, you will find the Skógar folk museum and the very picturesque 60-metre high Skógafoss waterfall. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in the Skógar area.
Day 6: Southwest Iceland and Reykjavík
Visit the waterfall Seljalandsfoss; take the path that leads behind the waterfall if you don’t mind the drizzle. Next up is the village of Hvolsvöllur, where you will find the Icelandic Saga Centre, centred on the great Njál’s saga. On the way to Reykjavík, visit Stokkseyri for an optional kayak ride and Eyrarbakki, home to the Eyrarbakki maritime museum. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.
