About Iceland
Iceland is a refreshingly unconventional travel destination. The Icelandic nature is unspoilt, exotic and mystical with its spouting geysers, active volcanoes, tumbling waterfalls, towering mountains, vast lava plains and magical lakes. Iceland’s fjords, glaciers and highland plains present visitors with some of the most beautiful and enchanting places they will ever see, as well as a rare feeling of utter tranquillity.
For travelers on a quest for action, Iceland’s pristine nature offers great potential for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, horse riding, cave exploring, hiking, swimming, skiing, river rafting, kayaking and mountain safaris on modified four-wheel drives, to name but a few. Iceland supports a surprisingly diverse Nordic flora and fauna and is an ideal place for ornithology enthusiasts, while also offering some of the world’s best whale watching destinations.
About Reykjavik
Reykjavík sometimes feels like a cosmopolitan capital and a tiny seaside village - all wrapped up in one. But Reykjavík has the best of both worlds; the qualities of a modern, forward-looking society complemented by a close connection to Iceland‚s beautiful and unspoilt nature.
Reykjavík’s legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavík has been described as a young and daring city that is characterized by strong contrasts. Conveniently small, clean and safe, it is more or less free from the major problems that haunt many other capitals. Big city events are frequent, the winter lights festival finished recently with thousands of participants and more tourist at this time of the year than we are used to.
This adventurous activity tour around Iceland includes not only many of the country’s biggest attractions, but also action-packed excursions under professional supervision in Iceland’s pristine nature. The tour includes accommodation in Reykjavík, Hvolsvöllur, Skaftafell National Park, Egilsstaðir, Lake Mývatn and Akureyri.
Day 1: The Capital of Cool
Arrival in Keflavik, meet and greet followed by transfer to Reykjavík.
If you arrive early, we recommend stopping at the Blue Lagoon on your way to Reykjavík (not included) and/or getting the Reykjavík Tourist Card, which grants you access to all the museums owned by the city of Reykjavík, all the swimming pools in Reykjavík and all buses that run within the greater Reykjavík area. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.
Day 2: Golden Circle and ATV Safari
Drive to some of the best-known natural phenomena in Iceland including Þingvellir National Park, the waterfall Gullfoss and the great Geysir area. Join an exciting ATV tour in Haukadalur by Geysir in the afternoon. Overnight in the Hvolsvöllur area.
Day 3: South Shore and Snowmobile Adventure
Drive from Hvolsvöllur to Skaftafell National Park, one of the most beautiful places in Iceland, stopping by Mýrdalsjökull glacier on the way for a thrilling snowmobile ride by a sub-glacial volcano. Overnight in the Skaftafell National Park area.
Day 4: Hiking on Europe’s Largest Glacier
Take a supervised glacier exploration or ice-climbing trip on Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. You can also join an optional hay cart ride over sands, marshes and waters to cape Ingólfshöfði, a birdwatcher’s paradise, in the afternoon. Overnight in the Skaftafell National Park area.
Day 5: Icebergs and the East
Drive from Skaftafell to Egilsstaðir in eastern Iceland, stopping on the way to take a boat ride on the picturesque glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón.
Day 6: Secluded Kayaking
Drive to Norðfjörður for a kayaking trip in one of the most remote fjords in Iceland. Drive to Lake Mývatn in the afternoon and visit the colourful Námaskarð pass and the Dimmuborgir lava maze. Overnight around Lake Mývatn.
Day 7: Lave Cave and Ice Formations
Join a guided jeep tour that takes you on a 4X4 jeep to the enormous tephra cone Hverfell and the crater row of Lúdentaborgir. You are then taken on an expedition into one of Iceland’s most spectacular lava caves, the 3500 year old and 370 meter long Lofthellir, which boasts Iceland’s most breathtaking natural ice sculptures. Overnight around Lake Mývatn.
Day 8: Grand Canyons and Great Whales
Drive through Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, visiting places such as Ásbyrgi canyon and the deafening Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. End the day with an optional evening whale watching tour from Húsavík, the ‘whale watching capital of Europe’. Overnight around Lake Mývatn.
Day 9: Enchanting North Iceland
Drive from Lake Mývatn to Varmahlíð in North Iceland via Akureyri, the ‘capital of North Iceland’. Optional activities on this day can include river rafting in Varmahlíð, horse-riding or a boat trip to the island Drangey, home to one of Iceland’s most notorious outlaws in the Saga Age.
Day 10: The End of the Line
Drive from Varmahlíð back to Reykjavík. Sights along the way can include the beautiful Þingeyrarkirkja church, where the first monastery in Iceland was founded in 1133; the natural fortress Borgarvirki; Deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring in Europe; the beautiful Hraunfossar lava waterfalls; and the historic site of Reykholt. You can also drive straight to Reykjavík and spend the afternoon there. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.
Day 11: Back to the Real World
Transfer to Keflavik airport with FlyBus. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can stop at the Blue Lagoon and even take a little tour of the Reykjanes peninsula (not included).
Please note that some activities mentioned may require a specific minimum of passengers or may only be operated on specific days of the week. Please contact Iceland Visitor for further information.
