Day 1 - Arrive & Explore Reykjavík

On arrival at Keflavik Airport, you will be welcomed by your private driver and transferred to your accommodation in central Reykjavík. After settling in, take the opportunity to explore the vibrant city centre at you own pace. The main downtown street, Laugavegur, offers a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants, coffee houses and bars to suit all tastes—all within an easy walk from your hotel.

Day 2 - Hot Springs & Saga Sites in Borgarfjörður

Today, our guided group journey begins! From the hotel, we’ll head towards Snæfellsnes Peninsula with stops along the way to visit attractions in the Borgarfjörður area of West Iceland. Among the highlights of our route are Deildártunguhver, the largest hot spring in Europe, and the beautiful Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls. History buffs may also enjoy a visit to Snorrastofa, the medieval research institute at Reykholt, where the early settler Snorri Sturluson wrote Saga Heimskringla in the 13th century. 


After lunch and a visit to an Icelandic goat farm, we’ll then head to Stykkishólmur, our overnight destination. This the small fishing town is often called the “Capital of Snaefellsnes”, and it is well known for its excellent natural harbour and well preserved colourful houses.

Day 3 - Magical Snæfellsnes & the Shark Museum

We will use this day to see the sights of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, including the Snæfellsjökull glacier, the beautiful pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur and the charming hamlets of Arnarstapi and Hellnar. Then after a nice walk around the scenic Búðarhraun area and a visit to an old church, we’ll enjoy lunch at the elegant Hótel Búðir.

Next we’ll head to the picturesque town of Grundafjörður for a visit to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum. Here we will have the unique experience of tasting hákarl, fermented shark, one of Iceland’s more unusual traditional delicacies. Back in Stykkishólmur this evening, we’ll taste even more Icelandic delicacies with dinner and live musical entertainment at a local seafood restaurant.

Day 4 - Icelandic History & the Golden Circle

From Stykkishólmur, we will “travel back in time” in Borgarnes, with visits to both the Icelandic Settlement Exhibition and Edduveröld, where Old Norse mythology is explained a model of the ancient world is mapped out. Afterwards, we’ll continue to Hvalfjörður for lunch at Hótel Glymur. 

For the second part of our day, we will visit some of Iceland’s most famous sights on the popular “Golden Circle” tourist route. Starting at Þingvellir National Park, we will see the very visible North Atlantic Rift, where the North American and Eurasian plates are slowly separating—along with the site of the first Icelandic Parliament established around 930 AD. We will also see the majestic Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes.

We will spend the night at Hótel Geysir, just across the road from the hot springs. After dinner we recommend a visit to hotel’s outdoor hot tubs, where you might just see the northern lights if conditions are right.*

Day 5 - Geothermal Farm Visit & Waterfalls

Today we’ll continue our journey to the south coast of Iceland. Our first stop will be at the Friðheimar tomato farm to visit their geothermally-heated greenhouse and get a taste of their product. Next we’ll visit the fairy tale-like Seljalandsfoss waterfall—the only of its kind in Iceland where you can walk behind the cascade on a footpath. Just don’t forget your raincoat! Nearby we will enjoy lunch at the small and cosy Country Hótel Anna.

A bit further down the road is our next stop: the Skógar Folk Museum, a great place to experience how Icelanders lived and worked in the old days. Close by is the impressive 60 metre-high Skógafoss waterfall, where according to legend the first Viking settler in this area hid a treasure in the cave behind the cascade. Then we’ll continue east to Hjörleifshöfði to enjoy the view over the endless coastline.

Day 6 - The Glacier Lagoon & Hike at Skaftafell

Our journey today takes us to some of Iceland’s most photogenic attractions, starting with a visit to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here we will enjoy a short walk with a local expert that will tell us about the geology and the history of this amazing site. 

Afterwards we’ll head back west again and spend our time after lunch taking in the many sights in the beautiful Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park, named for Iceland’s largest glacier. Here we will hike (approx. 4 km round-trip) to the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall, which drops over a wide cliff of basalt columns that resemble organ pipes. Our last stop today will be at Dverghamrar Cliffs, a small but impressive canyon with more of the unusual, hexagonal basalt columns.

Day 7 - South Coast & Black Volcanic Beaches

On our way back to Reykjavik today our focus will be on the black sand beaches of South Iceland near the village of Vík í Mýrdal. We’ll visit the 120 metre-high promontory at Dyrhólaey with its spectacular rock arch, bird nesting cliffs and amazing views along with the unique Reynisdrangar basalt columns rising out of the ocean.

Next we’ll shift our focus to geology, first with a visit to the Volcano Visitor Centre at the Þorvaldseyri farm, where we can learn all about the infamous 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption and its impact on the local residents. From there we’ll drive past the beautiful Eyjafjöll mountain range to Hveragerði, a small town built around a geothermal field that the locals use to heat their homes and greenhouses.

Back in Reykjavik, you will be transferred to a Hotel in Reykjavik and then you can enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure.

Day 8 - Departure from Reykjavik

Now the time has come to say goodbye to this beautiful and peaceful island. When it’s time to depart, you will be picked up from the hotel for your airport transfer by coach bus about 3 hours before your flight. If you’re flying in the afternoon, you do have the option of visiting the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa (located on the way to the airport) to relax in the warm mineral waters surrounded by a lava field.
