Nearby at the Thorvaldseyri Farm, we have time to explore the family-run volcano visitor center and the multi-media exhibition about the local and worldwide impact of the 2010 eruption.Continuing east, we make a stop to admire the Skógafoss waterfall and the interesting artifacts of Iceland's past at the nearby Skógar Folk Museum. Day 3: Wonders of IceToday, we travel through the historic village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skaftafell National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty dominated by views of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. The highlight of the day is a trip to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, one of Iceland’s most photogenic attractions, where large pieces of ice calved from the glacier float peacefully in the lagoon as they gradually drift out to sea. Here, you have time to enjoy an optional 40-minute boat tour among the maze of icebergs, perhaps with sightings of curious seals. Spend another night in the Vík area. |

At Heimaey, the largest of these volcanic islands and main town, we have a chance to view the cliff-dwelling puffins, probably Iceland's most popular bird species. We will also walk up to the crater from the 1973 eruption of Eldfell that buried half of the town in lava. After lunch, you have free to explore the town before we return by ferry to the mainland.Spend the night in the Laugarvatn or Hveragerði area (depending on season). Note: If bad weather conditions prevent us from reaching the Westman Islands, the tour will instead continue on to Laugarvatn through the flood plains from the 1918 Katla volcano eruption. |
