From there, drive to Hveragerði, a year-round horticultural center that operates on geothermal energy, and onwards to your accommodation in Selfoss.

In the evening, we recommend a visit to the seaside town of Stokkseyri for an exquisite feast of lobster tails with garlic butter or the town’s famous lobster soup. Drive to the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, looking their best in their winter coats surrounded by frost and icicles. On the way, you'll pass the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier that captivated the world in 2010. Near Skógar, you can also take a short walk up to the edge of Sólheimajökull glacier where it descends from the highlands.

Continue onwards to the charming village of Vík, famous for its black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the prominent rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar off the coast. Back in Selfoss in the evening, we recommend a visit to the hotel's Riverside Spa or dinner at the excellent hotel restaurant. Driving distance: 260 km / 162 miles.

Day 3: Golden Circle & Thermal Baths

Begin your day with a short drive from Selfoss to the attractions along the Golden Circle route, starting with the dormant caldera of Kerið and onwards to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall. Then visit the great Geysir geothermal area on your way to Laugarvatn, an unusual lake with subsurface hot springs. Here, we recommend a stop at the Fontana thermal baths before heading to Þingvellir National Park, site of Iceland’s ancient assembly grounds and unique geological features.

On arrival to Reykjavik in the late afternoon, head to the Reykjavik domestic Airport to catch your 45 minute flight to Akureyri, “the capital of North Iceland”. A rental car awaits you at the airport, and your accommodation in the city centre is only a short drive away . After you’ve settled in, we suggest a walk around downtown Akureyri and dinner at one of the city’s cozy restaurants. Driving distance: 190 km / 118 miles.

Spend the night in central Akureyri.

One option is a walk along the historical centre of Hafnarstræti and Aðalstræti, viewing the old houses and visiting the Nonni Museum. Or take a break for a cup of coffee and cake at the cultural house, Hof.

A visit to the Christmas Garden, situated just outside Akureyri, gives a unique insight into Icelandic Christmas traditions over the centuries. Heading to the eastern side of the fjord you will also find the Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum along with the turf houses at Laufás. Another great option for the day is hitting the slopes at the excellent Hlíðarfjall ski area, just a 10 minute drive from the city.

Further along, you’ll come across the Hverarönd geothermal area with its gurgling mud pools and sizzling geysers. And don’t miss out on the unique experience of the Mývatn Nature Baths, where you might even see the northern lights while soaking in the therapeutic waters. Driving distance: 115 km / 71 miles.
