Experience Iceland’s winter wonders from North to South with this relaxing self-drive journey. Along with the chance to visit many of the country’s top natural and cultural attractions, you’ll also be able to sample delicious local cuisine like the South Coast’s famous lobsters and rejuvenate yourself at thermal baths in the fresh air surrounded by frosty landscapes. And if conditions prevail, you may even see the northern lights!
This package includes rental car of your choice (4x4 recommended for winter) and accommodation in the cities of Akureyri, Selfoss and Reykjavik as well as in the picturesque countryside of Lake Mývatn.

Day 1: Blue Lagoon & LobstersOn arrival to Keflavík Airport in Iceland, collect your rental car and head to the first highlight of your tour: the Blue Lagoon, a soothing geothermal spa where you can soak in the warm mineral-rich waters to unwind after your flight. From there, drive to Hveragerði, a year-round horticultural center that operates on geothermal energy, and onwards to your accommodation in Selfoss.In the evening, we recommend a visit to the seaside town of Stokkseyri for an exquisite feast of lobster tails with garlic butter or the town’s famous lobster soup. If conditions are right, you may even see the northern lights—you can get updates about viewing conditions each night from your hotel. Driving distance: 115 km / 71 miles. Spend the next two nights at Hotel Selfoss in Selfoss. |

Day 2: Icy Waterfalls & Rocky BeachesDrive to the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, looking their best in their winter coats surrounded by frost and icicles. On the way, you'll pass the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier that captivated the world in 2010. Near Skógar, you can also take a short walk up to the edge of Sólheimajökull glacier where it descends from the highlands.Continue onwards to the charming village of Vík, famous for its black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the prominent rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar off the coast. Back in Selfoss in the evening, we recommend a visit to the hotel's Riverside Spa or dinner at the excellent hotel restaurant. Driving distance: 260 km / 162 miles. Spend another night in Selfoss. |

Day 3: Golden Circle & Thermal BathsBegin your day with a short drive from Selfoss to the attractions along the Golden Circle route, starting with the dormant caldera of Kerið and onwards to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall. Then visit the great Geysir geothermal area on your way to Laugarvatn, an unusual lake with subsurface hot springs. Here, we recommend a stop at the Fontana thermal baths before heading to Þingvellir National Park, site of Iceland’s ancient assembly grounds and unique geological features.On arrival to Reykjavik in the late afternoon, head to the Reykjavik domestic Airport to catch your 45 minute flight to Akureyri, “the capital of North Iceland”. A rental car awaits you at the airport, and your accommodation in the city centre is only a short drive away . After you’ve settled in, we suggest a walk around downtown Akureyri and dinner at one of the city’s cozy restaurants. Driving distance: 190 km / 118 miles. Spend the night in central Akureyri. |

Day 4: Capital of North IcelandEnjoy a full day in Akureyri. This small and charming city, situated by the shores of Eyjafjörður, offers many interesting museums, restaurants and a variety of winter activities in the area. One option is a walk along the historical centre of Hafnarstræti and Aðalstræti, viewing the old houses and visiting the Nonni Museum. Or take a break for a cup of coffee and cake at the cultural house, Hof.A visit to the Christmas Garden, situated just outside Akureyri, gives a unique insight into Icelandic Christmas traditions over the centuries. Heading to the eastern side of the fjord you will also find the Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum along with the turf houses at Laufás. Another great option for the day is hitting the slopes at the excellent Hlíðarfjall ski area, just a 10 minute drive from the city. Spend another night in Akureyri. |

Day 5: Lake MývatnDrive towards the winter world of Lake Mývatn, an area known for its otherworldly surroundings and unique eco-system. On your way, be sure to stop at the rounded cascades of Goðafoss. At Mývatn you’ll find the eerie lava formations of Dimmuborgir, which according to legend house the “hidden people” and other supernatural beings.Further along, you’ll come across the Hverarönd geothermal area with its gurgling mud pools and sizzling geysers. And don’t miss out on the unique experience of the Mývatn Nature Baths, where you might even see the northern lights while soaking in the therapeutic waters. Driving distance: 115 km / 71 miles. Spend the night by Lake Mývatn. |

Day 6: Return to ReykjavikEnjoy the first half of your day in Mývatn, perhaps with a hike around Dimmuborgir or a visit to the bird museum. For those craving adventure, why not go on a snowmobile tour or join a riding trip through the snow on the back of an Icelandic horse? Head back to Akureyri in the afternoon for your 45-minute flight to Reykjavik.After arriving to Reykjavik and storing your luggage at your accommodation, we suggest a stroll around the historic city center. In the evening, enjoy dinner at one of the many fine restaurants and, if you’re up to it, check out some of the lively bars and live music venues that give Reykjavik its reputation as a nightlife hot spot. Driving distance: 100 km / 62 miles. Spend the night in central Reykjavik. |

Day 7: DepartureIt’s time to say goodbye to Iceland today after your action-packed winter break. Transportation to Keflavík Airport is provided via Flybus. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can fit in a visit to the city’s brand new Harpa concert hall.Note: Additional nights can be added in Reykjavík, Snæfellsnes or Selfoss on request. |

Our rental car selectionWe‘ve partnered with one of Iceland’s most reliable and efficient car rental agencies to offer top-notch service and a great selection of high-quality, dependable vehicles. All rentals include a standard insurance policy with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), unlimited mileage, GPS, two drivers and Icelandic VAT @ 25.5%. Fuel or oil is not included. Optional insurance upgrades, additional drivers and child seats are available and payable locally at the car rental office.
On arrival to Keflavík International Airport, a representative of the car rental agency will be waiting for you at the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name on it. You will then be shuttled to the agency's office to complete all paperwork and choose among optional services or upgrades before collecting your vehicle. |

After booking your package with Icelandguest.com, you will be contacted within two working days by your designated travel consultant, who will assist with your booking and serve as your point of contact for any travel needs during your stay.You will receive the full name and direct contact information for your travel consultant along with information about your booking, payment and what to expect during your holiday. If you are paying by credit card, no payment will be deducted from your credit card until you have been contacted by your travel consultant.

Delivery of travel documents
Travel documents will be delivered as follows:- At time of deposit payment: You will receive the pro-forma invoice by email.
- Within 30 days of deposit payment: You will receive the full itinerary by email.
- At time of full payment: You will receive the confirmation invoice and all vouchers by email.
- Within 14 days of full payment: Road map and information booklet about driving in Iceland will be sent by post
Please note that we must use the billing address of the credit card holder as the shipping address for the road map and information booklet. If the package is booked less than one month in advance of departure, you will instead receive these items at your first accommodation in Reykjavík.
