This winter version of our popular "South & West Iceland" self-drive tour brings you up close to Iceland’s incredible natural attractions, with the added benefit of fewer crowds and lighter traffic. With the freedom of your own rental car, you can experience majestic waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, dramatic beaches, vast glaciers and historical sites as well as with free time for optional activities along your journey.
This package includes rental car of your choice (4x4 recommended for winter) and accommodation in Reykjavik, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula area, the Selfoss area and Hvolsvöllur.

Day 1: Welcome to ReykjavikArrive at Keflavík International Airport in Iceland and transfer to Reykjavík via Flybus. After storing your luggage at your accommodation, we suggest a stroll around the colorful historic centre of the city, with visits to some of the many museums, shops and cozy cafes.You’ll also find a great assortment of restaurants with diverse cuisines to tempt your taste buds. And for those who wish to partake in the city’s legendary nightlife, the downtown is full of lively bars and live music venues. Spend the night in central Reykjavík. |

Day 2: Wonderful West IcelandIn the morning, collect your rental car in Reykjavík and start your journey on the Ring Road towards the magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Here, the rugged lava landscapes rise from the sandy beaches and steep cliffs, dominated by the Snæfellsjökull glacier, long believed by locals to possess magical powers. It was also the setting of Jules Verne's classic "Journey to the Centre of the Earth".Make a stop in the charming seaside town of Stykkishólmur, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner of local seafood before heading to your accommodation for the evening. Driving distance: 241 km / 150 miles. Spend the night on Snæfellsnes Peninsula. |

Day 3: The Magic of SnæfellsnesDriving along the coastline today through Snæfellsjökull National Park, there are plenty of interesting stops, including Dritvík Cove, the impressive cliffs of Lóndrangar and the mossy lava fields around Búðir. You can also find many interesting hiking paths here. Driving distance: 120 km / 75 miles.Spend another night on Snæfellsnes Peninsula. If conditions are right, this area is also a wonderful place for viewing the northern lights in the nighttime! |

Day 4: Journey to the South CoastAs you head towards the beautiful south coast today, your drive takes you through the town of Borgarnes, where you can pay a visit to the Icelandic Settlement Center of the whimsical World of Puppets exhibition.Continue south towards the famous Golden Circle route, with a stop to Þingvellir National Park. There, you can take a short hike in the scenic rift valley between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Driving distance: 330 km / 205 miles. Spend the night in the Selfoss area. |

Day 5: The Golden CircleFrom Selfoss, continue your journey along the Golden Circle route, starting with a stop to the dormant Kerið caldera and then towards the Haukadalur geothermal area, home of the great Geysir and its more active neighbor, the Strokkur geyser. Finally, pay a visit to the iconic Gullfoss waterfall.For an special Icelandic dinner this evening, we recommend the delicious lobster feast at the charming Við Fjöruborðið restaurant in Stokkseyri, a 15-minute drive from Selfoss. Another option is to enjoy the steam baths and sauna at the Riverside Spa in Selfoss. Driving distance: 170 km / 105 miles. Spend another night in the Selfoss area. |

Day 6: Sightseeing in the SouthToday, your journey takes you to the picturesque waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, with views of the now famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier on the way. This area is rich in optional activities, such as guided glacier walks, ice climbing excursions or snowmobile tours on Sólheimajökull glacier. Another option is a guided super-jeep tour or hike in the geologically-diverse Þórsmörk nature reserve or Tindfjöll glacier.Later, drive to Vík, a seaside village famous for its stunning black sand beaches and the dramatic rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar. Availability of accommodation
Please note that although we have included specific accommodations within our holiday packages, these may be subject to change.Due to high demand in the busy summer months (June-August), the selection of accommodations may be limited in some of Iceland‘s more remote rural areas. Therefore, we reserve the right to substitute a named property in the same locality for one of a similar standard or higher, and we will ensure that our clients are notified in advance of the departure date.

Our rental car selectionWe‘ve partnered with one of Iceland’s most reliable and efficient car rental agencies to offer top-notch service and a great selection of high-quality, dependable vehicles. All rentals include a standard insurance policy with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), unlimited mileage, GPS, two drivers and Icelandic VAT @ 25.5%. Fuel or oil is not included. Optional insurance upgrades, additional drivers and child seats are available and payable locally at the car rental office.
On Day 2 of your holiday, you will be picked up by your car rental agent between 09:00 and 10:00 from your accommodation in Reykjavik and taken to the car rental depot. There, you will complete all paperwork and choose among optional services or upgrades before collecting your vehicle. |

After booking your package with Icelandguest.com, you will be contacted within two working days by your designated travel consultant, who will assist with your booking and serve as your point of contact for any travel needs during your stay.You will receive the full name and direct contact information for your travel consultant along with information about your booking, payment and what to expect during your holiday. If you are paying by credit card, no payment will be deducted from your credit card until you have been contacted by your travel consultant.

Delivery of travel documents
Travel documents will be delivered as follows:- At time of deposit payment: You will receive the pro-forma invoice by email.
- Within 30 days of deposit payment: You will receive the full itinerary by email.
- At time of full payment: You will receive the confirmation invoice and all vouchers by email.
- Within 14 days of full payment: Road map and information booklet about driving in Iceland will be sent by post
Please note that we must use the billing address of the credit card holder as the shipping address for the road map and information booklet. If the package is booked less than one month in advance of departure, you will instead receive these items at your first accommodation in Reykjavík.
