Day 1: Arrival & Reykjavík

Arrive at Keflavík International Airport in Iceland and transfer to central Reykjavík via Flybus. After storing your luggage at your accommodation, we suggest a stroll around the colorful historic center of the city, with visits to some of the many museums, shops and cafes. You’ll also find a great assortment of restaurants to tempt your taste buds. To celebrate your first night in Iceland, why not check out the city’s vibrant nightlife or live music scene?

Day 2: Borgarnes & Northwest Iceland

Collect your rental car in the morning in Reykjavík and start your journey towards the charming town of Borgarnes. Just a short drive from Borgarnes will bring you to Europe’s most voluminous hot spring, Deildartunguhver, and the picturesque Hraunfossar waterfalls. Continue on towards the Hrútfjörður area in Northwest Iceland, where you will rest for the night. Driving distance: 250 km / 155 miles.

Day 3: Discoveries in North Iceland

Drive towards Skagafjörður fjord, an area known as the “mecca of the Icelandic horse”, where horses are said to outnumber people. In the Skagafjörður area, stop at Hofsós, where we recommend a dip in the geothermal water of the town’s swimming pool and a visit to the Icelandic Emigration Center. Continue on towards beautiful Siglufjörður, which was the historic centre of Iceland’s herring fleet and complete your circle with a stop at Dalvík before heading toward Akureyri, your destination for the evening. Driving distance: 245 km / 152 miles.

Day 4: Surreal Sights of Lake Mývatn

Drive towards Mývatn, an area known for its otherworldly surroundings and unique eco-system, including a thriving birdlife. Here you’ll also find the eerie lava formations of Dimmuborgir, which according to legend are said to house hidden people and other supernatural beings. Further along, you’ll come across the Hverarönd geothermal area with its gurgling mud pools and sizzling geysers. For a rewarding detour, drive to the Dettifoss waterfall, surrounded by the steep walls of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Then return to Akureyri, where we recommend an evening dinner at one of the city’s cozy restaurants. Driving distance: 260 km / 161 miles.

Day 5: Capital of the North

Use this day for enjoying the many sights and activities in Akureyri and its surrounding areas. This small and charming city, overlooking the Eyjafjörður fjord, is often called the “Capital of the North”. In the city center you’ll find a number of well-preserved old houses, interesting museums, and beautiful botanical garden. In the afternoon drive from Akureyri and end the day in Reykholt in West Iceland. Driving distance: 318 km / 198 miles.

Day 6: The Golden Circle

After leaving Reykholt we suggest a drive into the deep fjord Hvalfjörður and stop at the old whaling station. From Hvalfjörður head on to the national park at Þingvellir before stoping at Laugarvatn, a lake with subsurface hot springs. We recommend a stop at the Fontana thermal baths before embarking to the one and only Geysir in Haukadalur and the famous waterfall Gullfoss. The last stop of the day is the now dormant Kerið caldera on your way south to Selfoss. Driving distance: 250 km / 155 miles.

Day 7: Waterfalls & Black Sand Beaches

Today, your journey takes you to the picturesque waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, with views of the infamous yet captivating Eyjafjallajökull glacier on the way. Near Skógar, you can get some fresh air with a short walk up to the edge of the Sólheimajökull glacier where it descends from the highlands. Continue on to Vík, a charming village famous for the nearby black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the dramatic rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar off the coast. Driving distance: 260 km / 161 miles.

Day 8: Volcanic Islands & Puffins

Start the day with a trip to the Westman Islands, rising from the sea off Iceland’s South Coast. From the harbor by Landeyjar, a 30 minute ferry takes you to Heimaey, the largest of the islands, aptly nicknamed “Pompeii of the North”. During the 1973 volcanic eruption of Mt. Eldfell, all residents of Heimaey were safely evacuated, and many returned to take part in the excavation of their village as the eruption subsided. The other big local attractions are the puffins, with their brightly colored beaks, that live in large colonies on the islands’ cliffs. Driving distance: 155 km / 96 miles.

Day 9: Reykjanes Peninsula & Blue Lagoon

Drive from Selfoss to the idyllic seaside villages of Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri, home to the Ghost Center and what is widely hailed as the best lobster soup in Iceland. From there, follow the coast eastwards towards the Reykjanes peninsula and onwards to the geothermal area of Krýsuvík and Lake Kleifarvatn. Nearby lies the coastal town of Grindavík, where you can pay a visit to the stockfish museum before stopping at the Blue Lagoon for a therapeutic soak in the soothing mineral waters. End the day in Reykjavik. Driving distance: 155 km / 96 miles.

Day 10: Departure

After your amazing holiday in Iceland, it’s time to head home today. Transportation to Keflavík Airport is provided via Flybus. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can spend the morning at one of the many museum, art galleries or shops. You also have the option of a short whale watching tour from Reykjavik’s old harbor or a tour of the city’s brand new Harpa concert hall.

Note: Additional nights can be added in Reykjavík, Akureyri or Selfoss on request.

Our rental car selection

We‘ve partnered with one of Iceland’s most reliable and efficient car rental agencies to offer top-notch service and a great selection of high-quality, dependable vehicles.

Automatic cars are available on request for an extra fee in types A, B and C. Please contact us for prices.

All rentals include a standard insurance policy with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), unlimited mileage, GPS, two drivers and Icelandic VAT @ 25.5%. Fuel or oil is not included. Optional insurance upgrades, additional drivers and child seats are available and payable locally at the car rental office.

collecting your vehicle

On Day 2 of your holiday, you will be picked up by your car rental agent between 09:00 and 10:00 at your accommodation in Reykjavik and taken to the car rental depot. There, you will complete all paperwork and choose among optional services or upgrades before collecting your vehicle.

 A valid credit card is required by the car rental agency, and a credit card imprint will be taken at the time of vehicle collection for security reasons. Your voucher covers the cost of the rental, but the imprint may be used to deduct any extra charges due to use or damage of the vehicle.

Delivery of travel documents

Travel documents will be delivered as follows:

  • Within 30 days of deposit payment: You will receive the full itinerary by email.
  • At time of full payment: You will receive the confirmation invoice and all vouchers by email.
  • Within 14 days of full payment: Road map and information booklet about driving in Iceland will be sent by post

Please note that we must use the billing address of the credit card holder as the shipping address for the road map and information booklet. If the package is booked less than one month in advance of departure, you will instead receive these items at your first accommodation in Reykjavík.
