This self-drive tour in South Iceland takes you to some of the most remarkable natural wonders of the area, including grand waterfalls stemming from the glaciers, puffin colonies on the volcanic Westman Islands, the black beaches of Vík and much more. You can also enjoy the healing comforts of mineral-rich geothermal waters at one of the area’s thermal baths and spas.
Beginning and ending in the capital city of Reykjavík, the package includes accommodation in Selfoss to keep the daily driving distances reasonable.
Day 1: Arrival & ReykjavikArrive at Keflavík International Airport in Iceland and transfer to central Reykjavík via Flybus. After storing your luggage at your accommodation, we suggest a stroll around the colorful historic center of the city, with visits to some of the many museums, shops and cafes. You’ll also find a great assortment of restaurants to tempt your taste buds. To celebrate your first night in Iceland, why not check out the city’s vibrant nightlife or live music scene?Spend the night in central Reykjavík. |

Day 2: The Golden Circle & Thermal BathsExperience some of Iceland’s best-known natural phenomena with a drive along the “Golden Circle” route. Start at Þingvellir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and site of the rift between the American and European continents. Then head to Laugarvatn, where we highly recommend a stop at the Fontana thermal baths. Next, visit the Geysir geothermal area with its spouting hot springs. Further along, you’ll come to the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfall as well as the historic site of Skálholt and the now dormant Kerið caldera on your way south to Selfoss. Driving distance approx. 200 km / 124 miles.Spend the night in Selfoss. |

Day 3: Waterfalls & Black Sand BeachesToday, your journey takes you to the picturesque waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, with views of the infamous yet captivating Eyjafjallajökull glacier on the way. Near Skógar, you can get some fresh air with a short walk up to the edge of the Sólheimajökull glacier where it descends from the highlands. Continue on to Vík, a charming village famous for the nearby black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the dramatic rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar off the coast. Driving distance: 260 km / 161 miles.Spend the night in Selfoss. |

Day 4: Day in the SouthToday you can explore the south at your leisure. You can enjoy some of the exciting optional activities in the area such as horse-riding, a super-jeep tour to Þórsmörk or adventerous trip to volcano Eyjafjallajökull. If you have a 4x4 vehicle you can explore the amazing Landmannalaugar in the highland interior. Another option is to take a 30 minutes ferry from Landeyjar to explore Westman Islands, aptly called the Pompeii of the North.Spend another night in Selfoss or the nearby area. |

Day 5: Reykjanes Peninsula & Blue LagoonDrive from Selfoss to the idyllic seaside villages of Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri, home to the Ghost Center and what is widely hailed as the best lobster soup in Iceland. From there, follow the coast eastwards towards the Reykjanes peninsula and onwards to the geothermal area of Krýsuvík and Lake Kleifarvatn. Nearby lies the coastal town of Grindavík, where you can pay a visit to the stockfish museum before stopping at the Blue Lagoon for a therapeutic soak in the soothing mineral waters. End the day in Reykjavik. Driving distance: 180 km / 112 miles.Spend the night in central Reykjavík. |

Day 6: DepartureIt’s time to head home today after your amazing journey around Iceland. Transportation to Keflavík Airport is provided via Flybus. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can spend the morning at one of the many museum, art galleries or shops. You also have the option of a short whale watching tour from Reykjavik’s old harbor or a tour of the city’s brand new Harpa concert hall.Note: Additional nights can be added in Reykjavík or Selfoss on request. |

Therefore, we reserve the right to substitute a named property in the same locality for one of a similar standard or higher, and we will ensure that our clients are notified in advance of the departure date.

Our rental car selectionWe‘ve partnered with one of Iceland’s most reliable and efficient car rental agencies to offer top-notch service and a great selection of high-quality, dependable vehicles. All rentals include a standard insurance policy with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), unlimited mileage, GPS, two drivers and Icelandic VAT @ 25.5%. Fuel or oil is not included. Optional insurance upgrades, additional drivers and child seats are available and payable locally at the car rental office.
On Day 2 of your holiday, you will be picked up by your car rental agent between 09:00 and 10:00 from your accommodation in Reykjavik and taken to the car rental depot. There, you will complete all paperwork and choose among optional services or upgrades before collecting your vehicle. |

Delivery of travel documents
Travel documents will be delivered as follows:- At time of deposit payment: You will receive the pro-forma invoice by email.
- Within 30 days of deposit payment: You will receive the full itinerary by email.
- At time of full payment: You will receive the confirmation invoice and all vouchers by email.
- Within 14 days of full payment: Road map and information booklet about driving in Iceland will be sent by post
Please note that we must use the billing address of the credit card holder as the shipping address for the road map and information booklet. If the package is booked less than one month in advance of departure, you will instead receive these items at your first accommodation in Reykjavík.
