Garður is a small community, located northernmost at the Reykjanes peninsula. The town, which was established in the year 1908, has been growing steadily through the years and offers a lot of service and activities for the traveller.

The townsfolk have built their livelihood on fish processing through the ages. The Garður Peninsula Historical Museum, which is located at the peninsula, tells the story of the fishermen and the interesting history of the people who lived and worked in the community. This local history museum offers a unique collection of engines and other old items used in the industry and afterwards you can relax and get some refreshments at the caféteria.

Other intersting places in Garður are the two old lighthouses, which are also located at the peninsula. The older lighthouse was built in the year 1897 but the other one, which is the highest lighthouse in the country, in the year 1944 and is still being used. This place, with its magnificent view over Faxaflói is perfect for walking tours because at the coastline there is one of the best bird watching spots in Iceland. Near the lighthouses there is a camping site with good facilities.

A big and elegant gymnasium is located in the town with an outdoor swimming pool and a hot spot so you can relax after a busy day. Close by is one of the best golf courses in Iceland where you can enjoy the fresh air with a fabulous view over the sea and the coast.

This charming community has a lot to offer and it is only a 10 minutes drive from the international airport. It is therefore ideal to start or end your trip around Iceland in Garður and experience a true Icelandic atmosphere.
