Sægreifinn (The Sea Baron)

Sægreifinn (The Sea Baron) is a cozy seafood restaurant nestled in downtown Reykjavík’s old harbor and offering a variety of delicious dishes.

Started by accident when Icelandic fisherman and fish shop owner Kjartan Hilmarsson grilled some fish at the request of passing tourists, word quickly spread of his culinary talent and he eventually opened the restaurant to the public.

Sægreifinn is well known for the taste and specialty of its offerings and, most of all, its famous lobster soup. Other noteworthy dishes include minke whale, smoked eel, sea-agra soup and skate, often grilled to perfection on kabob skewers. In addition, you can always ask to try shark prepared according to Viking tradition.

The fish is always fresh and the selection varies depending on the catch of the day and season. Opening hours are are overall rather generous, closing at 22:00 in winter and 23:00 in summer.
