The Icelandic Emigration Center
The Icelandic Emigration CenterThe Icelandic Emigration Center was founded in 1996 to commemorate the Icelandic emigrants to North America and promote contact between their descendants and the people of Iceland.
In the Center's three impressive buildings near Hofsós harbour there are exhibits on the emigration from Iceland and the history of settlements in various parts of North America. Prepared in cooperation with North American descendants of the emigrants, the exhibits portray the lives of the thousands of Icelanders who emigrated to North America. They provide insight into conditions in Iceland at the time, the emigrants reasons for going, their hopes, and the reality that awaited them.
The Center's staff collects and catalogues information on the emigration and offers a genealogy service and library facilities. Emphasis is placed on forming ties to Icelandic Associations and other descendants of Icelanders as well as involvement in exchange visits of young and old alike. Work is in progress to digitally record all exhibits.
