About Iceland
Iceland is a refreshingly unconventional travel destination. The Icelandic nature is unspoilt, exotic and mystical with its spouting geysers, active volcanoes, tumbling waterfalls, towering mountains, vast lava plains and magical lakes. Iceland’s fjords, glaciers and highland plains present visitors with some of the most beautiful and enchanting places they will ever see, as well as a rare feeling of utter tranquillity.

For travelers on a quest for action, Iceland’s pristine nature offers great potential for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, horse riding, cave exploring, hiking, swimming, skiing, river rafting, kayaking and mountain safaris on modified four-wheel drives, to name but a few. Iceland supports a surprisingly diverse Nordic flora and fauna and is an ideal place for ornithology enthusiasts, while also offering some of the world’s best whale watching destinations.

About Reykjavik
Reykjavík sometimes feels like a cosmopolitan capital and a tiny seaside village - all wrapped up in one. But Reykjavík has the best of both worlds; the qualities of a modern, forward-looking society complemented by a close connection to Iceland‚s beautiful and unspoilt nature.

Reykjavík’s legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavík has been described as a young and daring city that is characterized by strong contrasts. Conveniently small, clean and safe, it is more or less free from the major problems that haunt many other capitals. Big city events are frequent, the winter lights festival finished recently with thousands of participants and more tourist at this time of the year than we are used to.

Royal de Luxe - Street Theatre Performing in Reykjavik

Royal de LuxeRoyal de Luxe will be performing in Streets and open spaces of Reykjavik, e.g. by the Lake, by the Harbour and all over the City Centre from 9th of May to 12th of May. Royal de Luxe is an extraordinary French street theatre company, renowned throughout the world. In the past years, they have created a series of spectacular shows involving giant figures as high as 10 to 12 metres. The stories are usually simple: the animal or giant arrives in town and lives its life, going about its business for a few days. Extraordinary interactions take place between passers-by and the performance; residents become enchanted with the activities of these miraculous beings and begin to follow their every move. By the end of the performance, huge crowds gather to watch the latest episode in the life of the visiting creature, leaving some people behind in tears. Their latest adventure, The Sultan’s Elephant, is based on Jules Verne’s story and performed in Nantes and Amiens, France in 2005 and last year in London, Antwerpen, Calais and Le Havre where it was a great hit.

Royal de Luxe will create a new story for Icelanders, taking place at Reykjavik Arts Festival. Those familiar with the group and their figures will recognise some old faces but in an altogether different surrounding and context. The story will remain a secret until May 10 when something unexpected will happen in Reykjavik.

The director Jean Luc Courcoult founded Royal de luxe in 1979 in Aix-en-Provence but in 1989 they moved to Nantes and have been based there ever since. The company has visited countries all over Europe as well as Korea, China, Vietnam, Chile and Africa. Some of their most celebrated shows have been revived many times and performed in front of thousands of spectators, e.g. the group spent six months in Africa and three in China.

The performance of the French street theatre company Royal de Luxe is a co-operative project of the French festival "Pourquoi pas? French spring in Iceland 2007" and the Reykjavík Arts Festival.
