About Iceland
Iceland is a refreshingly unconventional travel destination. The Icelandic nature is unspoilt, exotic and mystical with its spouting geysers, active volcanoes, tumbling waterfalls, towering mountains, vast lava plains and magical lakes. Iceland’s fjords, glaciers and highland plains present visitors with some of the most beautiful and enchanting places they will ever see, as well as a rare feeling of utter tranquillity.

For travelers on a quest for action, Iceland’s pristine nature offers great potential for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, horse riding, cave exploring, hiking, swimming, skiing, river rafting, kayaking and mountain safaris on modified four-wheel drives, to name but a few. Iceland supports a surprisingly diverse Nordic flora and fauna and is an ideal place for ornithology enthusiasts, while also offering some of the world’s best whale watching destinations.

About Reykjavik
Reykjavík sometimes feels like a cosmopolitan capital and a tiny seaside village - all wrapped up in one. But Reykjavík has the best of both worlds; the qualities of a modern, forward-looking society complemented by a close connection to Iceland‚s beautiful and unspoilt nature.

Reykjavík’s legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavík has been described as a young and daring city that is characterized by strong contrasts. Conveniently small, clean and safe, it is more or less free from the major problems that haunt many other capitals. Big city events are frequent, the winter lights festival finished recently with thousands of participants and more tourist at this time of the year than we are used to.

Whale Watching Centre

Hafsula

A Whale of a time.

Reykjavík has become one of Europe’s top spots to go whale watching. So step on board Hafsúlan (The Sea Gannet) and sail with the Whale Watching Centre alongside these mysterious mammals of the deep. The waters around Reykjavík are some of the most fertile feeding grounds in the North Atlantic, attracting numerous species of whales, which journey to Iceland’s shores for nourishment. The area is a natural paradise right next to the capital. A paradise indeed. From minke whales to humpbacks to orcas, pods of cetaceans return to Faxaflói Bay year after year. Since the Whale Watching Centre runs three trips daily from Reykjavík, a whale safari is the perfect day excursion. After witnessing these gentle creatures in the wild, you’re back in time to visit a museum, meet your friends for dinner, or hit the town running.

A Sea Aquarium in the Wild

There’s nothing like watching the world’s largest mammals swimming within an arm’s reach of your boat. It’s so exciting that you’ve shot an entire roll of film at the first sighting of a white-big dolphin surfing off the bow. Then the humpback breaches, its body crashing into the ocean with a massive splash. Maybe it’s a pod of orcas skimming the surface of the waves. Look! There’s a minke whale swimming with her calf. Remember, this is a sea safari, so there’s more to your trip than spotting whales. You’ll see guillemots nesting on the small islands around Reykjavík. There’ll be sea gannets bobbing up and down on the ocean, feeding from these deep waters. The majestic mountains that ring Iceland’s coast make the perfect picture postcard. And on the return to Reykjavík, the captain sails around Puffin Island, where thousands of puffins nest with their hatchlings. A trip with the Whale Watching Centre is like visiting a sea aquarium, but in the wild. Built for comfort Because whales are constantly on the move, it pays to have a fast boat. Hafsúlan, the Whale Watching Centre’s catamaran, can reach speeds of up to 22 knots. The boat’s speed allows the Whale Watching Centre to sail around a larger area of water, and since it takes less time to return to Reykjavík, you spend more time with the whales. Speed is not everything. Hafsúlan is decked out for your comfort and safety. At 25 m, the boat holds up to 150 people. Because it’s custom-designed for whale watching, passengers won’t bump into each other as they goggle over the whales swimming before them. If you want to go inside, walk below deck for a warm drink and tasty snack. Don’t worry; you won’t miss a minute of the action. Large windows encircle the boat, so you can keep these mammoths of the deep within your sight.

Gate to the underwater world

The Whale Watching Centre was the first company to run whale safaris out of Reykjavík. Always ahead of its time, the company has opened the Whale Centre, enabling tourists to explore the mystery of the ocean. The Whale Centre is unlike anything else in Iceland. It’s housed in a 45m, converted fishing trawler docked at the historic Reykjavík harbour. Greeting tourists is a replica minke whale skeleton and a small aquarium off the stern. Go below deck to the information centre and enjoy a cup of coffee in the cafe while waiting for your whale safari to begin. Admission to the Whale Centre is free for passengers going whale watching on Hafsúlan. To reach the Whale Centre’s main attraction venture into the hull of the boat, which has been converted into a multi-media theatre where movies about whales are projected onto a screen while the whale’s song echoes. Deep within the hull, you’re actually below the ocean’s waterline. With a measure of imagination, you’ve descended into the depths of the sea. The Whale Centre opens the gate to the underwater world, and it’s a world you won’t want to leave. But it’s time to swim to the surface. The boat has arrived. Your whale safari is departing.

Hafsúlan departs daily at 09:00, 13:00 and 17:00 from the Whale Watching Centre, Reykjavík harbour. hotel-pickup/reservations Call: +(354)533 2660 Further informations at: www.whalewatching.is
